〈范迪門之地〉(Van Diemen's Land) -獻給John Boyle O'Reilly的歌

第一次知曉范迪門之地(Van Diemen’s land)，是在艾茉莉狄金森(Emily Dickinson)的詩作〈如果你在秋天來到〉(If you were coming in the fall)中，她以范迪門之地象徵漫長無止境的等待。

If only centuries delayed, 如果只是耽擱幾個世紀，

I ’d count them on my hand, 我會用我的手細數，

Subtracting till my fingers dropped逐一彎曲手指直到

Into Van Diemen’s land. 墜入罪人的逐地。

If you were coming in the fall 如果你在秋天來到

〈范迪門之地〉(Van Diemen’s land)這首歌曲是U2樂團的吉他手欸吉(The Edge)，原名大衛伊凡思(David Evans)為紀念愛爾蘭文壇上的共和鬥士約翰波依耳歐來里(John Boyle O'Reilly ,1844-1890)所寫的詞，曲調借自愛爾蘭民謠〈遼闊的水面〉(The Water is Wide)。歐來里於21 歲時加入「愛爾蘭共和兄弟會」(The Irish Republican Brotherhood)又稱芬尼亞會(Fenian)，致力於愛爾蘭獨立運動。歐來里因此被英國政府逮捕，原被判死刑，後改為流放。傳聞他被流放至到范迪門之地(Van Diemen’s land)，但他其實是到了西澳大利亞的佛蒙特(Fremantle)。後來歐來里成功逃離佛蒙特監獄，遠走美國，成為知名的報人，著有詩集數冊。晚年他雖仍致力於愛爾蘭獨立運動，但已從武裝鬥爭路線改採提升民族自尊的和平觀點。1890年，歐來里於美國自宅吞服其妻的安眠藥自殺。

澳洲南太平洋外的塔斯馬尼亞島(Tasmania)號稱世界的盡頭，舊名范迪門之地(Van Diemen's Land)，1642年荷蘭航海家塔斯曼(Abel Tasman)發現此島，為紀念當時派遣他前往探險的荷蘭東印度總督安東尼范迪門(Anthoonij van Diemenslandt/ Anthony van Diemen)而命名為范迪門之地。島上的亞瑟港(Port Arthur)有著「監獄鎮」之稱，在1830年到1877年間曾有多達12500名罪犯被流放於此。范迪門之地監獄的廢墟一眼看到寬闊的大海，自由和禁錮、絕望和掙扎、毀滅和重生總是交替上演著。
