〈瑪姬梅〉(Maggie May)三部曲中的性別意象:妓女、小鮮肉與姐弟戀

〈瑪姬梅〉(Maggie May)是洛史都華(Rod Steward)與吉他手馬丁桂廷頓(Martin Quittenton)的共同創作,收錄在洛史都華1971年的《畫中有話》(Every Picture Tells A Story)專輯。而歌名是取自講述妓女洗劫水手的利物浦民謠〈瑪姬梅〉(Maggie Mae)。另崛起於80年代中晚期的民謠創作女歌手蘇珊薇格(Suzanne Vega)則以自己個人的「姊弟戀」經驗為題材,譜寫了〈我絕非你的瑪姬梅〉(I'll Never Be Your Maggie May),聲稱自己絕對不可能成為洛史都華70年代經典歌曲中的那個〈瑪姬梅〉。那麼〈瑪姬梅〉究竟傳達了什麼樣的性別意象呢?

1971 10 3 日,英國搖滾歌手洛史都華的個人第三張單曲 〈瑪姬梅〉(Maggie May)登上美國告示牌單曲榜首位,在隔一個星期,亦高據英國單曲榜冠軍,在大西洋兩岸,皆連續五星期奪冠,而收錄此曲的《畫中有話》(Every Picture Tells A Story)專輯亦同時霸佔英、美兩地專輯榜首位四星期。成為史上第一位歌手同時雄霸英、美兩地的單曲及專輯榜榜首,〈瑪姬梅〉可說是洛史都華的成名曲。

其實當時唱片公司對單曲〈瑪姬梅〉並沒有太大信心,只把這曲放在45轉黑膠單曲唱片的B面,而正面是洛史都華翻唱民歌好手提姆哈汀 (Tim Hardin )的〈相信的理由〉(Reason to Believe),可是電台DJ卻只愛播〈瑪姬梅〉,也促使洛史都華邁向成功大道。

〈瑪姬梅〉編曲俐落配器飽滿,吉他手馬丁桂廷頓(Martin Quittenton)編寫的前奏與間奏居功闕偉。MTV不插電版中木吉他彈奏由滾石樂團(Rolling Stones)的羅尼伍德(Ronnie Wood)跨刀,曼陀鈴琴聲交織,堪稱經典。洛史都華與羅尼伍德是分分合合的多年老友,他們1969年同時離開傑夫貝克樂團(Jeff Beck Group),另組洛史都華與臉孔樂團(Rod Stewart & The Faces)1975年羅尼伍德再加入滾石樂團(Rolling Stones)

〈瑪姬梅〉歌詞描繪了和一名少男與熟女瑪姬梅發生關係後的矛盾情感與兩難處境,部份是洛史都華16歲時的的親身經驗。在20071月發行Q雜誌,洛史都華回憶說:「瑪姬梅或多或少是一個真實的故事,關於與我發生性關係的第一個女人,那是在1961年蟠龍爵士音樂節(Beaulieu Jazz Festival)‧‧‧。」

此歌雖以少男觀點描繪與熟女瑪姬梅發生關係後的矛盾情感與兩難處境,卻也成就了〈瑪姬梅〉的女性刻板印象,略述如下:

*You lured me away from home, just to save you from being alone
妳引誘我離家只為了拯救妳免於寂寞
此句歌詞呈現了瑪姬梅是個勾引少男的浪蕩形像,另一方面也勾勒出拯救自己免寂寞的女性自主意識。

*The morning sun, when it's in your face, really shows your age
早晨的陽光照在妳的臉上 洩漏了妳的年紀
這裡點出了瑪姬梅是位熟女,究竟有多老呢?這臉龐應是滿布歷經滄桑的歲月刻痕。而「臉」在此歌中出現多次,是非常重要的意象。

*But you turned into a lover and mother what a lover! You wore me out
可是妳變成了愛人,媽呀,何等的一個愛人!妳讓我磨蝕銷魂
此句的"mother"若直譯為母親,顯示了瑪姬梅的年齡不小此處的"mother"亦是雙關語,為"mother fuck"誇示用語的省略,可譯為媽的,而磨蝕銷魂則代表了女性的情慾自主。
*Maggie, I wish I'd never seen your face 
瑪姬我寧願從來沒見過妳的臉
I'll get back and ride home one of these days...
總有一天我要上路回家...
這兩句的歌詞突顯了少男矛盾的情結,寧願從來沒見過妳的臉顯示少男的懊悔,想了結這段姐弟戀,也呼應了瑪姬梅濃妝塗抹下的真實年齡。可是這位16歲的小鮮肉仍迷戀在肉體的歡愉,受限於阮囊羞澀,遲遲未能踏上歸家路。「收拾書本回學校」暗示了男主角的年紀,「偷走老爸的球桿靠打撞球賺錢,替自己找個尚缺人手的搖滾樂團」則顯露了少男經濟困窘的處境。關於歌中的少男情懷請參見honeypie(馬世芳)對此歌的介紹

利物浦民歌中的妓女形象

"Maggie"一詞在英國俚語中譯為妓女,利物浦傳統民歌〈瑪姬梅〉(Maggie Mae)就是描述妓女瑪姬洗劫水手的的故事。既然是民歌就會有許多版本,在較完整的版本中,係一名從西非塞拉利昂(Sierra Leone)回到利物浦的水手的自述。船東結清了水手這段航程的薪水,口袋的滿滿的他,看到瑪姬在舊康寧漢宮徘徊(站壁),她的身材如此完美、聲音如此嬌柔,於是就讓她帶他回到住處。第二天早上醒來,她已經席捲了所有的錢,甚至他的衣服,堅持說已放在凱利當舖的保險庫。但他在當舖無法找到他的財物,於是報警。她因盜竊罪被判刑,從此在萊姆街再也見不到她的身影。至於利物浦的萊姆街則是許多性工作者聚集之處。

那麼,瑪姬究竟去哪兒呢?史坦赫吉爾(Stan Hugill)1830年一艘航向范迪門之地(Van Diemen's Land)的女犯人船-凱恩斯號的水手查爾斯皮克內爾(Charles Picknell)所寫的日記中,發現一些與此歌相關的線索。此歌已知最早版本的是〈迷人的奈莉蕾〉(charming Nellie Ray),女主角是奈莉蕾,副歌唱道「哦!我迷人的奈莉蕾,他們已經帶走了妳,去那范迪門殘酷海岸,因為妳剝皮了許多裁縫,洗劫了好多水手,我們彼得街再也看不到妳的蹤影。」在這些民歌版本中,瑪姬梅與奈莉蕾都成了被流放的妓女與竊盜犯。

19573月,17歲的約翰藍儂(John Lennon)成立了一個名為採石工人(The Quarrymen)的噪音爵士(Skiffle)樂團,之後保羅麥卡尼(Paul McCartney)、喬治哈里遜(George Harrison)陸續加入,是為披頭四樂團(The Beatles)的前身。據說,約翰藍儂就是在教會聚會(church fair)演唱此曲時初遇保羅麥卡尼。不僅採石工人樂團常演出此歌,後來披頭四樂團在錄音時也常以此歌暖場熱身。

19691-2月間,披頭四展開原本定名為歸來(Get Back)的專輯錄製。但是,團員不滿意原製作人兼混音師格林瓊斯(Glyn Johns)5月所完成的混音製作版本,暫時將錄音母帶擱置,直到19703月,樂團將錄音母帶交給菲爾史佩克特(Phil Spector)重新製作,專輯中的許多歌曲都是按照保羅麥卡尼在錄音之初所提議的採用現場演唱方式進行錄製,包含了這首〈瑪姬梅〉(Maggie Mae),這也是196586日推出的第五張專輯《救命》(Help)之後,首度收錄非披頭四團員創作的

歌曲。史佩克特所製作的版本專輯名稱與拍攝披頭四這段錄音過程的紀錄片後來都被命名為《隨它去》(Let It Be)

民謠創作女歌手蘇珊薇格(Suzanne Vega)以自己個人的「姊弟戀」經驗為題材,譜寫了〈我絕非你的瑪姬梅〉(I'll Never Be Your Maggie May),聲稱自己絕對不可能成為洛史都華70年代經典歌曲中的那個〈瑪姬梅〉,徹底反擊了洛史都華所形塑的瑪姬梅意象。

蘇珊薇格在〈我絕非你的瑪姬梅〉一曲中,不僅針對洛史都華〈瑪姬梅〉一曲中使用的意象「臉、床、離開」一一反擊,還倒打一耙嘲諷地唱道「你繼續吧/沒有女孩能對你說不」。確實,輿論多少在「老少配」中對女性有著不寬厚的對待,對「姐弟戀」暗藏老牛吃嫩草的嘲諷。回歸女性觀點,與其說是眷戀男人的青春肉體,倒不如說,比起小鮮肉的身體,女人更傷感自己年華容顏的消逝。唉!世事就是如此這般地冷酷。
