有時沿著鐵軌、有時沿著海岸，更多時候他走在山裡頭。
渴了，攫一口溪水來喝，累了，找個樹蔭在樹下坐著，平靜自己流浪起伏的心。
許多人說曾經在各地見過他，背上總帶著他的行囊。

他說：「流浪啊流浪，沒有家的生活是流浪。流浪啊流浪，我說世上沒有人不在流浪，在我們的心找到家之前，我們都在流浪。」

吹笛手在路上，沒人知道他是誰，從何而來，要往哪去。
吹笛手知道自己的家鄉在哪兒，知道自己的親人、朋友，他所愛的人，在家鄉呼喊著他的名字，但他不曾返家。

從早晨灰濛濛的天空，日光剛透過樹葉灑落大地時，他就背起行囊上路。
