皇后合唱團(Queen) 1975年發行的經典專輯「歌劇院的一夜」(A Night At The Opera)中，收錄'39這首由該團吉他手布萊恩‧梅伊(Brian May)譜寫的歌曲，史詩般的民謠曲風，動聽的旋律、淒美的故事、不確定的時空，讓人們對這首歌的意涵充滿了無限想像。
當年聽這首歌時僅專注在志願軍和愛人分離的淒美情節，無法參透'39究竟意指為何？總是不求甚解的以為和1939年二次大戰前某秘密行動有關，還有人認為是16世紀航海殖民的故事。當然這些揣測皆非作者原意，因為布萊恩‧梅伊在歌詞當中已經留下精心佈局的線索，若再配合進一步了解布萊恩‧梅伊的學歷，即可發現這首歌的真正意涵。
1970年代布萊恩‧梅伊在倫敦帝國學院攻讀物理學博士，卻因加入皇后合唱團大紅大紫而中斷了研究，2006年他與其他學者共同編寫的天文物理學(Astro-physics)著作「大爆炸！宇宙完整史」發行，該書敘述宇宙從大爆炸至隨後的演化進程，重燃他返校繼續博士論文的雄心，今年五十九歲的梅伊正在準備論文的審查，如一順利預計2008年5月取得物理學博士。
布萊恩‧梅伊引用了時間相對論中時間擴張(Time Dilation)的物理理論寫了'3 9這首外太空殖民探險的歌曲，敘述志願探險隊於'39年出發，一年回來後發現地球人已過了一百年的時間，人事已非，只能在兒孫輩的眼裏看見愛人的哭泣。這和中國童話中老鼠精開運河(改編自隋唐演義第32回)以及南丈崖遇仙記的情節頗為類似。
時間擴張(Time Dilation)的理論可以清楚的解釋這種現象：
在日常生活中，我們總認為時間是不停流動的，每個人過的時間都相同，當我過了一小時，你也一定過了一小時，不會多也不會少，這種認知稱為『絕對時間』的觀念。
狹義相對論指出，運動速度越快的物體，它的時間就過得越慢。這是相對於靜止的物體而言，移動較快的物體相較於移動較慢者，時間過得比較慢，對人而言就是比較不易變老。時間的計算公式如圖。
其中 V 是物體的運動速度值，C是光速， ｔ 是靜止的觀察者所過的時間，ｔ’則是運動物體所過的時間。
假設有一架太空船，以光速的 99.99% 速度(即 0.9999C)遠離地球，當地球上整整過了一天(86400秒)之後，太空船的時間過了多久呢 ? 我們將 t=86400，而 v=0.9999C 代入公式，可以得到太空船所過的時間只有 1221 秒，差不多是 20 分鐘半。也就是說，當太空人以高速運動時，他自己覺得飛了20分鐘半時，地球上卻已經過了24小時了，這種現象就稱為『時間擴張(膨脹)』，這是已經獲得證實的理論。
如果地球上的人可以看到太空船的話，地球人會發現太空船上的一切都變得很慢，時鐘變慢了，太空人的動作、心跳也都變慢了，就好像電影中的慢動作鏡頭一樣，雖然太空人本身沒感覺有什麼不同，但在地球上的人來說, 太空船就像慢速播放的影片一樣, 變得很慢。
回到歌曲本身，布萊恩‧梅伊用原音吉他(acoustic guitar)奏出經典的和絃行進及指法，搭配帥哥羅傑‧泰勒(Roger Tayler)的鈴鼓及大鼓，約翰‧狄肯(John Deacon)的貝斯，主唱佛萊迪‧墨裘瑞(Freddie Mercury)的磁性歌聲(這首歌布萊恩和佛萊迪都曾主唱過)，當然還有該團的招牌－華格納歌劇式的華麗合聲，您可細聽羅傑泰勒在Don't you hear my call 及Aah, aah, aah, aah這兩段和聲中的飆高音。
另外，細心的聽眾可能會發現布萊恩‧梅伊精心佈局的歌詞中有一點邏輯上的疏失，就是這句「Your mother's eyes from your eyes cry to me 在你眼中，我看見你母親對著我哭泣」，如果太空探險家出發時小孩才1歲，百年後回到地球小孩已是人瑞級的101歲，因為百歲人瑞並不多見，若將母親改為祖母會更合理。
