羅傑威提克(Roger Whittaker),一位歌聲渾厚、富有磁性的歌手,1936年出生並成長於非洲肯亞的奈洛比(Nairobi),長大後至英國的大學唸書。因為對音樂的熱愛,畢業後便在英國開始他的音樂生涯,1969 年起陸續有幾首單曲在英國排行榜有不錯的成績。小有名聲之後,他到電台主持廣播節目,在節目中向聽眾徵求歌詞,由他挑選優秀作品並親自譜曲。
不久,一首描述戰前戀人分離的浪漫作品〈最後的道別〉(The Last Farewell)雀屏中選,作詞者朗韋斯特(Ron Webster)是位銀器匠,也是位業餘民歌手。一個陰雨綿綿的夜晚,他下班後撘公車回家,看著車窗上串流而下的雨點和窗外黑暗中綿延不絕的山脈,整個故事在他腦海中逐漸成形。完成後,他立刻寄到電台,羅傑威提克讀了之後非常喜歡,立即將之譜曲,於1971 年完成錄音,收錄在《極品男人》(Special Kind Of Man)專輯中。這首歌一開始並未受到太大的注意。直到四年後,美國亞特蘭大市某位電台節目策劃的太太到加拿大度假,在偶然的機會下聽見了這首歌。回國後這位太太極力推薦給先生,促成這首歌曲在電台被強力放送。由於聽眾反應甚佳,唱片公司決定在美國發行單曲,不僅很快進入全美排行前四十名,後來在全世界共賣出 1100 萬張單曲唱片,連「貓王」艾維斯普里斯萊都翻唱過這首歌。
